Food Access

NEKCA has 5 locations throughout the Northeast Kingdom that offer direct access to healthy food and other essential items including hygiene products, diapers and wipes as well as programs to support food security and nutritional health long-term.

Also, keep an eye out in your town for our mobile units! We do fresh recovery from local stores and businesses daily to stock our shelves and also bring pop-up events with food to rural towns.

Direct Food Access provided at NEKCA:

Our food programs offer many nutritional food options to our community members that are facing food insecurity. We offer a wide variety of food items as well as recipes and information to foster knowledge about the foods we provide and how they may be used.

Our food programs operate on a first come first serve basis and all are welcome and eligible for this service.

  • NEKCA’s Food Pantries offer healthy foods including fresh produce in a welcoming environment. We have locations in St. Johnsbury, Newport, Canaan, and Island Pond that offer direct access to healthy foods, recipes, and other essential items.
  • NEKCA’s Family Resource Centers offer mini food markets for families with children under 6 in Lyndon Center and Newport.

We can also help you apply for:

  • 3SquaresVT (vermontfoodhelp.com) is a federal USDA program (formerly called “food stamps”) that can help stretch your food budget so you can put three healthy meals on your table every day.
  • Commodities Supplemental Food Program access to supplemental non-perishable food items for low-income seniors.
  • Farm to Family Coupons will help you buy fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables at participating Famers’ Markets.

What Participants Have to Say

“I love this place and the staff! The new Marketplace is awesome!”

SURVEY PARTICIPANT

“You all do a very good job at what we have seen. You all are warm and helpful for all of us that go there. Without your food shelf I know I would not make it through the month. Thank you very much.”

NEKCA PARTICIPANT

“Today we had a new senior community member join our NEKCA services. We were able to talk with them and convince them that it was OK- they weren’t taking food from anyone who ‘needed it more’.”
