CHAMPPS (Coordinated Healthy Activities, Motivation, and Prevention ProgramS) is a grant from the Vermont Department of Health to promote healthy behavior, including better nutrition, increased physical activity, and disease prevention. The grant serves Orleans and Northern Essex Counties and is directed by the ONE Fit & Healthy Coalition, which includes representatives from the VT Dept. of Health, North Country Hospital, Green Mountain Farm to School, North Country Schools After School Program, Siskin Ecological Adventures, IROC (Indoor Recreation of Orleans County), and others. CHAMPPS has funded a community assessment related to health, strategic planning, and implementation of projects. In 2010, successes included a small but promising beginning to a gleaning program in the region (including distribution of almost 5,000 lbs. of gleaned corn to area food shelves and schools) publication and distribution of physical activity and healthy eating resources, and promotion of area organizations and resources.
